Cyndi Lauper rocks House of Blues
When I think of Cyndi Lauper I think of the 80s. “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” was an anthem among teen girls and “Time After Time” went on to become a classic ballad covered by numerous artists. I don’t normally think of the blues when I think of Lauper – but that’s what we got last night at House of Blues. Which makes it sort of a fitting venue I suppose.
Lauper’s newest album, ‘Memphis Blues’, was released in June and that was the vast majority of her set last night. She started out with “Just Your Fool” and paused between songs to give the audience a bit of history on the Blues and the various songs she was doing – old Blues songs she’d found and liked like “Early In The Morin’”. The crowd certainly enjoyed it and for a Wednesday night the venue was pretty full. Lauper has a very good voice for the Blues and she definitely rocked the house but I’ll admit that I was slightly disappointed. I was looking forward to the 80s music I knew and loved.
I wasn’t totally disappointed though. The encore brought out old favorites like “Time After Time” and “True Colors” and when “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” hit the crowd went insane. So while I would have been happier with a better mix of old and new, Lauper will of course be pushing her newest album and she was, as always, in top form.
“Memphis Blues” is in stores now.
